Smithfield Canyon, Utah Description: Elevation 5200 ft. 7 campsites on Summit Creek. Two miles up the road is the Smithfield Canyon trailhead, which leads into the Mount Naomi Wilderness. There is a stock loading ramp at the trailhead parking lot. Trail 007 leads to Tony Grove Lake, on the other side of the wilderness. The gravel/dirt road leads you through bands of mixed conifer and hardwood brush. The trail follows Summit Creek for the entire ride. You may have to cross the stream and get a little wet. But in mid summer it will be a great way to cool down. The bike trail ends at the Mt. Naomi Wilderness boundary. You can continue on foot as bicycles are not permitted in the Wilderness. The canyon is a gorgeous and fun place and some of the greatest hiking trails in the valley are up there, you just have to know where to find them. Not only is this canyon great for hiking, it is equipped with camping sites and a mountain biking trail.
Although there is not quite as many camp sites as in other canyons in the valley, they are well-kept and easy to get to. The camping spots are mostly located by the creek and are great for bonfires and parties with his friends.
The canyon is usually not as crowded as others. This canyon is also a very popular place with runners because of the scenic route and seclusion. Smithfield resident Camille Woodward said the canyon is one of her favorite places to go running, especially at this time of the year. Watch out for runners while making your way up because the road gets pretty windy. It is also suggested using a truck if you're planning on going very far up as it can get bumpy once you pass the first few campsites. The trailhead is located at Center Street and 300 East.
